SFCM - Dr. K lectures at the University of New Mexico about the Basics of Fertility
Apr 22, 2009
As an Assistant Professor and the Director of Male Fertility at the University of New Mexico, Dr. Kuang enjoys lecturing to the Urology residents about Male Infertility. As we learn more about male infertility, urologists from all over the country will be asked to see more and more men who are facing the challenges of male infertility. On March 31, 2009, Dr. Kuang talked about the Basics of Fertility. The highlights were reinforcing the following facts:
1. Always remember that "it takes two to tango!" An assessment of womans' reproductive potential is critical and should be performed at the same time as a man's evaluation to optimize a couple's chances of having a child. A proper female evaluation becomes more critical as a woman enters her late 30's. For couples where the man has had a vasectomy, vasectomy reversal is still possible even when the woman is older (we have had pregnancies with women who were 38-39 years old). While it is possible, it is really important that these couples learn about IVF by visiting a reproductive endocrinologist since IVF may be an equally viable option that may be more appropriate for their reproductive needs and timetable.
2. Don't forget the basics of timing sex! Assuming a relatively normal sperm count, couples should have sex every other day starting 7 days before the expected day of ovulation including the day of ovulation.
3. Remember that natural lubricants like saliva are always preferable if vaginal dryness is an issue. If artificial lubricants are needed, the best one out there is Preseed.
