Taking vitamins continues to be all the rage. People are always talking about having to take more of this, that or the other vitamin to make up for some deficiency they may or may not have. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with decreased bone density, impaired mental sharpness, infections, immune system problems and cancers. Vitamin D comes from being in the sun, diet or oral supplements. Recent animal studies suggest that being low in Vitamin D may impair proper sperm production.
Researchers from Denmark wondered if Vitamin D levels were associated with male infertility. In 2011, Ramlau-Hansen et al. looked at 307 men and were surprised to find that high, NOT low, Vitamin D levels were actually associated with lower total sperm counts….31% lower from 137 Million to 94 Million. This is not what they expected. Please take this with a grain of salt. This is a preliminary study that just underscores the need for more studies to see if this association is real, but it definitely is interesting.
Bottomline: As with all things in life, just because “some is good”, it does not mean that “more is better.” Before you decide to go “extreme” with vitamin and herbal supplements, just make sure you touch base with your male fertility specialist to make a team decision as to whether this is a good idea for you.
