Taking vitamins continues to be all the rage. People are always talking about having to take more of this, that or the other vitamin to make up for some deficiency they may or may not have. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with decreased bone density, impaired mental sharpness, infections, immune system problems and cancers. Vitamin D comes from being in the sun, diet or oral supplements. Recent animal studies suggest that being low in Vitamin D may impair proper sperm production.

Researchers from Denmark wondered if Vitamin D levels were associated with male infertility. In 2011, Ramlau-Hansen et al. looked at 307 men and were surprised to find that high, NOT low, Vitamin D levels were actually associated with lower total sperm counts….31% lower from 137 Million to 94 Million.  This is not what they expected. Please take this with a grain of salt. This is a preliminary study that just underscores the need for more studies to see if this association is real, but it definitely is interesting.

Bottomline: As with all things in life, just because “some is good”, it does not mean that “more is better.” Before you decide to go “extreme” with vitamin and herbal supplements, just make sure you touch base with your male fertility specialist to make a team decision as to whether this is a good idea for you.

Dear jamie,
Great question! While the jury is still out, most data suggest if vitamin supplements are going to help a man’s sperm, it is going to help improve the quality, not the quantity. In 2005, Dr. Greco and colleagues looked at high dose 1 gram Vit C and E daily therapy and found that it reduced the percentage of sperm with DNA damage (an issue of quality, not numbers). Please note: The research data on vitamin supplements and sperm is not robust and is fraught with a lot of design flaws so who knows if future research may actually identify vitamins that reliably increase sperm counts but for now, we don’t know of any.

Best,
Dr. K

This is a great reminder to all of us.  “Too much or too little is always not good to our health”.

Is there a way for a person to tell if he is taking too much Vitamin D without going into a clinical test?

Thanks.

As a follow-up to my article on Natural Ways to Increase Your Chances of Getting Pregnant, this article describes what men should and shouldn’t do to improve sperm count and quality.

According to Dr. Bernard Robaire, a professor in obstetrics and gynecology at McGill University, men produce about 100 million sperm per day - about 1,000 sperm for every heartbeat. So in the vast majority of cases, improving sperm count and quality is all about providing healthy nutrients to make sperm, and making sure that one’s lifestyle choices aren’t damaging one’s sperm. Put another way, men don’t have to do much to increase overall sperm production; the focus should be on providing the right materials to produce healthy sperm, and then keeping those sperm healthy.

I’m wondering, can you add vitamins to coffee. The reason why I ask is because I read somewhere that coffee affects Male Fertility and I recently got the Gaggia 14101 and I love to drink it. So can I add vitamins to offset this?
